Every report FIELD ZERO has filed, numbered in order.
- FIELD REPORT
- What is it like inside this world? People first: lived experience, personality, place. Told by someone inside the scene.
- BRIEFING
- What is actually going on here? Subject first: context, evidence, disagreement. Usually a reporter, academic or long-time expert.
- DISPATCH
- What is happening right now? Moment first: one event, without trying to explain the whole subject.
- DOSSIER
- Sits above all three: a subject big enough that we keep returning to it.
About Field Zero
FIELD ZERO documents unusual people, overlooked places, subcultures, political and social movements, conflict and lives outside mainstream attention. Both offline and online.
Right now, that mostly means conversations: with someone living inside a scene, or with a reporter, academic or expert who has studied it closely.
We're small and self-funded. We go looking for the stories other outlets have already moved past, or never noticed at all.
Find the people.
Ask the questions.
Look closer.
Method
We speak to people close to the subject. Sometimes that's participants; sometimes critics, reporters, researchers or observers who have spent time understanding it.
We ask direct questions, challenge assumptions where necessary, and give each conversation enough space to reveal how the subject looks from that particular vantage point.
The goal is not to force a neat conclusion, but to understand the people, ideas and forces involved.
Editorial
FIELD ZERO doesn't pretend neutrality means silence. We have a lens: questions of identity, belonging, class, masculinity, community, borders and cultural change come up often, because they sit underneath most of the stories we're drawn to.
We try to be fair to positions we don't hold, and rigorous about the ones we do. Readers and listeners can disagree with the frame; they shouldn't be able to fault the reporting.
